F H Harvey see Dulux Trade Contract Partnership as an extension of their business proposition and this approach has been instrumental in helping deliver some of the most prestigious projects up and down the country as clients see real value in the scheme,' says Darron Ashfield, Contractor Development Manager at Dulux Trade.

Here, we take a closer look at two of F H Harvey and Dulux Trade's success stories.

F H Harvey & Sons were awarded the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham (QEHB) contract in August 2007. The £545m construction opened its doors to patients on 16 June 2010 and the building offers accommodation which has been favourably compared to a high-profile, award-winning private hospital. It has 1,213 inpatient beds, 30 operating theatres and a 100-bed critical care unit, the largest co-located critical care unit in the world.

QEHB is host to the Royal Centre for Defence Medicine (RCDM) and treats all seriously injured British military personnel evacuated from overseas. It also treats military casualties from other countries, such as Denmark.

The project was designed to comply with HTM56, a health technical memorandum from the Department of Health stating specification requirements for the internal finishes to new build health projects. Having worked with and advised on this document on previous health contracts, FH Harvey & Sons were able to suggest compatible products for the different areas of the hospital and give the client a selection board for them to choose from. From this they chose a wipeable Dulux Trade Diamond Matt product for the general wall area, and a more advanced anti bacterial product, Dulux Trade Sterishield Diamond Matt, for the associated theatre rooms. They also suggested the use of Dulux Trade Quick Dry Gloss for the woodwork to reduce the environmental impact and also remove the risk of yellowing, due to the amount of time the first areas would be left standing.

The Dulux Trade Diamond range extends the maintenance cycle which made forecasting maintenance cycle plans with the client much easier. Its fast drying times were also a bonus, especially working in a hospital environment against the clock.

Hercules - RAF Lyneham

Contractor: Balfour Beatty & Kier Group Joint Venture

Client: Ministry of Defence (MOD)

Decoration dates: Oct 2013 - May 2015

Contract value: £930k

Labour resource at peak: 45

AkzoNobel products used: Armstead Trade Acrylic Durable Eggshell, Armstead Trade Contract Matt, Dulux Trade Supergrip primer, Dulux Trade Weathershield, Dulux Trade Satinwood, Armstead Trade Undercoat & Gloss, Armstead Trade Gloss, Armstead Trade Pliolite Masonry.

Project Hercules was a joint venture between Balfour Beatty plc and Kier Group, converting three huge hangars that had previously been home to Hercules aircraft, plus ancillary buildings into a military technical college for the RAF, Army and Navy.

Working on a live military base meant working in secure areas, causing minimal disruption. F H Harvey & Sons were tasked with refurbishing hangars (including exteriors, internal walls, ceilings and floors), officers mess and the onsite church, decorating new-build living accommodation, communal areas and training rooms.

The hangars themselves presented a number of challenges - for example, the height of the ceilings meant that specialist access equipment and harnesses were needed. As this was an existing site with a history that must be respected and preserved, the refurbishment works were carefully undertaken by the Harvey & Sons team. The officer's mess bar had some tired woodwork that was brought back to life using Dulux Trade Satinwood.

In addition to the refurbishment works, F H Harvey & Sons also decorated the new accommodation buildings, which included single-living apartments, communal areas, gymnasium and theatre.

Dulux Trade greatly values F H Harvey as an esteemed Contract Partner and wishes F H Harvey every success in the next 50 years! Read more about the company at F H Harvey & Sons
