The 7-point guide to getting everything in place for a smooth job

Running through a simple checklist is a good way to make sure you’ve got everything in place before you get to work. Here’s what to tick off.

1. Colour check

Has your client given you a final decision on the colour they want? While advising the customer is a valuable way to share your expertise, the final choice should lie with them. Having a clear record of colour codes or names will give clients extra confidence in you.

2. Scope of work check

Have you covered all the job details in your scope of work, including preparation work, colour codes, the possible number of coats, problems to be solved, special requests and the surfaces to be covered? It’s best not to start any work without having this in place, and it will help make it clear to clients that they are dealing with a professional. See our guide on ‘How to agree an accurate scope of work for more.

3. Product check

Once the scope is clear, and before you commit to any deadlines, it’s time to check your supplies – will your suppliers be able to provide you what you need in the times available? Are there any special finishes that may take a little longer to source? Are you also considering the primers and any tools needed?

4. Kit check

Is there any special equipment needed, such as extra-long ladders or a heavy-duty sander? Are your regular tools likely to last the job?

5. Crew check

Will any parts of the job require extra help, such as an assistant or a plasterer? Double-check their availability and rates before committing to costs and timings.

6. Agreement check

Your detailed client agreement should include the scope of work along with the payment terms, details of your insurances and guarantees, any client commitments to give you access, and any other terms you choose to include. No work should begin without a client seeing and signing this.

7. Financial check

Finally, if you’ve asked for any up front fees, have these been paid?
