Top tips for an accurate quote
Use this checklist to help create accurate quotes every time
An accurate quote means that your job will be profitable, but also gives the customer confidence in your work. And of course, unlike an estimate, a quote is usually binding.
Get the measurements right
However keen some customers might be to help, it’s best not to rely on their measurements. Overestimating the area can lead to a quote that’s too high, but underestimating can hurt your profits. Take your time and use a tape measure or digital measuring tool, and, of course, deduct the area of windows and doors when measuring walls. This way you have all the information you need when it comes to quoting for a job.
Cover the extras
In addition to basic paint and time costs, factor in the extras. Will your existing tools be enough, or will you need new equipment? Also, consider if any special preparation might be needed, or if surfaces such as marble or soft wood might need extra protection, and whether any parts of the job will require additional labour.
Check your prices
Double-check your costs – prices change, and you can lose profit if you quote based on an old price. But also check for availability: can paints be delivered in time for the start of the job? Are your usual colleagues going to be around, or might you have to call in someone more expensive?
Be detailed
Supply a detailed breakdown of the scope of work, including all materials, preparation work, the number of coats and volume of paint in each finish, the expected timeframe and any specialist labour needed. This helps ensure accuracy, but also reassures the customer that the quote is reliable. By being thorough at this stage, you’re proving that your services will be highly professional, too.
