Cuprinol Quick Drying Cladding & Fence Opaque Finish

Surface preparation

Surfaces must be sound, clean and dry before treating.

Remove all loose and defective coatings, if necessary stripping back to bare wood.

Remove and treat any mould, algae, lichen or moss with **Weathershield Multi-Surface Fungicidal Wash.

Thoroughly rub down all surfaces in the direction of the grain to remove any grey, weathered wood and surface sheen from remaining coatings, and then dust off (refer to your COSHH Assessment).

System information

Stir thoroughly before and during use.

Two coats of Cuprinol Quick Drying Cladding and Fence Opaque Finish will normally be required to produce a completely opaque finish. Allow the first coat to dry before applying the second. Allow up to 4 hours between coats.

Do not apply below 5°C, in damp conditions or if rain or frost is likely before the finish is fully dry.

Cuprinol Cladding & Fence Opaque Finish

Surface preparaton

General

Try a test area to ensure the final appearance is acceptable. Some bleed-through into light colours may occur.

Preservative treatment

All new work should include treatment with a wood preservative where necessary. Non-durable timbers or timbers containing a significant proportion of sapwood should be preservative treated with Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear(BP).

Rough sawn wood

Clean weathered and dirty wood using a stiff bristle brush (not a wire brush), detergent and water. Where surfaces are affected by mould or algae, etc, wash with a suitable fungicidal wash. Rinse and allow to dry.

New / Bare planed wood

Natural oils/resins should be removed from oily and resinous timbers using white spirit. If oil or resin levels are high, a stronger solvent such as cellulose thinners or a proprietary brush cleaner may be used. If in doubt first apply Cuprinol Cladding & Fence Opaque to a test area to check drying and adhesion are acceptable. Using an abrasive paper, sand down in the direction of the grain until smooth. Round off sharp edges. Remove dust and loose particles. Clean once more with white spirit and allow to dry thoroughly. Surfaces should be thoroughly brushed to remove loose particles, wiped with white spirit and allowed to dry.

Weathered planed wood

Completely remove all grey or de-natured wood by sanding or scraping back to a clean, bright surface before applying finish.

Painted or varnished wood

If old paint is in sound condition, Cuprinol Cladding & Fence Opaque can be applied on top, provided the surface is clean and dry. Sand well before applying over old paint. Ensure flaking or chalky paint is removed by stripping and sanding to a sound surface. Varnish should be completely stripped and the surface treated as for new work.

Woodstained wood

Lightly sand and wash surfaces with a mild detergent solution to remove dirt and contamination. Rinse and allow to dry. Where surface are affected by mould, algae, etc., wash with a suitable fungicidal wash. Rinse well with clean water and allow to dry thoroughly. Spot "prime" any bare wood with Cuprinol Cladding & Fence Opaque.

Fillers

Use a good quality exterior grade wood filler.

Test area

Carry out a small test to ensure that appearance, drying and adhesion are acceptable prior to large scale application.

System information

Normally there is no need to stir Cuprinol Cladding & Fence Opaque before use but any separated liquid on the surface should be stirred in gently.

Knotting

To reduce the risk of knot staining with light shades, a two coat application of an appropriate white shellac knotting is recommended prior to application of Cuprinol Cladding & Fence Opaque.

Cuprinol Garden Shades

Surface preparation

General

All surfaces must be clean, dry, free from wax, grease, oil etc.

Note: Creosote or similar finishes must be allowed to weather before application of Cuprinol Garden Shades. Try a test area to ensure the final appearance is acceptable.

Do not use or splash Cuprinol Garden Shades on plastics, plastic coated surfaces, rubber, asphalt, bitumen, oiled or waxed surfaces.

Do not apply Cuprinol Garden Shades below 5°C, in high humidity or if frost or rain is likely before the product can dry thoroughly. Cold, humid conditions can retard the drying and affect the final appearance and durability.

Note: Natural extracts in some woods can leach out and stain Cuprinol Garden Shades White and some light shades (refer to colour card for details). To reduce the risk of this occurring, apply two coats of white shellac knotting to bare knots and resinous areas and prime all bare wood.

Preservative treatment

All new work should include treatment with a suitable preservative such as *Cuprinol Low Odour Wood Preserver Clear (T).

Oily & resinous woods

Preparation of new / bare wood

Using a fine abrasive paper, sand down in the direction of the grain until smooth and round off sharp edges. Do not use wire wool. Remove dust and loose particles. Clean once more with white spirit and allow to dry thoroughly.

Weathered planed wood

Completely remove all grey or de-natured wood from planed surfaces by sanding or by scraping back to a clean, bright surface then treat as new wood.

Painted or varnished wood

If old paint is in sound condition, Cuprinol Garden Shades can be applied, provided the surface is clean and dry.

Sand well before applying over old paint. Ensure all chalky paint is removed by stripping and sanding to a sound surface.

Varnish should be completely stripped and the surface treated as for new work.

Woodstained wood

Lightly sand and wash surfaces with a mild detergent solution to remove dirt and contamination. Rinse and allow to dry.

Spot "prime" any bare wood with Cuprinol Garden Shades.

Fillers

Use a good quality exterior grade wood filler.

Application notes

Cuprinol Garden Shades is supplied ready for use. Stir cans thoroughly before and occasionally during use. Use a good quality natural bristle brush or, preferably, a synthetic filament brush.

Normally two coats of Cuprinol Garden Shades are sufficient although an extra coat may be required when applying a light shade over a dark finish or where exposure conditions are severe.

Ensure first coat and subsequent coats are dry before applying further coats (normally 2-3 hours in good conditions).

Cuprinol Exterior Wood Preserver (BP)

System information

Cuprinol Exterior Wood Preserver(BP) can be used on all types of bare wood, wood that has been previously pressure treated or wood that has been previously treated with a wood preservative (provided it has been allowed to weather). Ensure surface is clean, dry and free from any surface coating, mould or algae before use. Use pre-treated timber for in ground contact situations.

Shake or stir thoroughly before use and frequently during use to ensure even colour.

After suitable preparation apply 2-3 coats of Cuprinol Exterior Wood Preserver (BP). For best coverage three coats are recommended.

Please note that the colour in the can may look different when dry. If colour is important try a small inconspicuous area first.

Additional information

During application avoid spilling, splashing or over-spraying onto surrounding areas since stains can be difficult to remove.

Clean any splashes immediately with soap and water.

Finishing of treated timber

Timber treated is not suitable for paint, varnish or woodstain finishes.

Horticulture

Suitable for treatment of structural greenhouse timbers and timbers in close proximity with plants (not seed boxes). Extra thorough drying must be allowed under service conditions before introducing plants.

Beehives

Not recommended.

Metals

This wood preservative has no effect on common metals and metal fitments can be used on treated wood.

Biological growth

Wash with a suitable sterilizing solution. Rinse well with clean water and allow to dry thoroughly.

Previously varnished or painted surfaces

Completely remove paint, varnish or woodstains from wood before applying Cuprinol Wood Preserver Clear(BP).

These may be removed by chemical stripper (eg paint remover), hot air stripper and sanding. Finally remove loose particles.

System information

Brush: Flood all surfaces, paying particular attention to end-grain and joints to ensure maximum protection. Apply two liberal coats before the previous coat is dry. The more preserver is used, the better is the protection achieved.

Dip: Submerge the end of the timber in the preserver for the recommended period.

Use pretreated timber if timber is for use in ground contact.

Dip treatment is possible where practicable. Dip for 3-10 minutes.

Treatment of cedar wood

Western red cedar is a naturally durable, reddish-brown timber and is widely used for cladding, sheds, greenhouses and shingles. On weathering and if unprotected, the natural colour fades to silvery grey, then dark grey and eventually to black.

Cuprinol Garden Wood Preserver (BP) Red Cedar not only preserves the wood but also restores and maintains the colour of Western Red Cedar, and prevents discolouration without obliterating the grain.

Other shades of Cuprinol Garden Wood Preserver (BP) may be used on cedar wood where a different colour is required.

Cuprinol 5 Star Complete Wood Treatment (FP)

System information

Before treatment wood should be clean, free from bark, dirt and any surface treatment such as paint or varnish, air dry (25% moisture content maximum), properly prepared and fully worked.

Wood treatment

Determine the full extent of any decay by opening up the area. Remove all infected timber. Locate, identify and cure the cause(s) of damp. In the case of Dry Rot outbreaks, remove a further half a meter of timber, since this may have fungal strands in the timber. Where wood has been attacked by woodworm, cut away and burn all badly attacked wood. Make any necessary structural repairs. Treat the remaining timbers in the vicinity of the outbreaks and treat all replacement timbers, as indicated below.

Brush or Spray: Flood all surfaces with the treatment, especially end-grain and flood all joints to ensure maximum protection. Normally two or three liberal coats are required. Apply second and third coats before the previous coat is dry.

One flooded spray coat is equivalent to one brush coat.

Dip: Submerge ends of the timber in the preserver for the recommended period.

Immersion (Professional users only): Completely submerge the wood in an open tank of preserver. This method ensures that all surfaces of the wood receive maximum treatment.

Cuprinol Woodworm Killer (F)

System information

Before treatment wood should be clean, free from bark, dirt and any surface treatment such as paint or varnish, air dry (25% moisture content maximum), properly prepared and fully worked. Open up infested areas as far as possible, cut away and burn all badly attacked wood, making any necessary structural repairs. Treat remaining timbers in the vicinity of the outbreaks and all replacement timbers with Cuprinol Low Odour Woodworm Killer(F).

Wood Treatment: Application may be by injection, brush, dip or coarse spray. Recommended treatments for specific situations are given in the table below.

Brush or Spray: All surfaces should be flooded with Cuprinol Low Odour Woodworm Killer(F), paying particular attention to end-grain and flooding joints to ensure maximum protection. Normally two or three liberal coats are required with subsequent coats applied before the first is dry. The more eradicator used, the better the protection achieved. For spray treatment one flooded spray coat is equivalent to one brush coat and should be applied using a low pressure, coarse (non atomising) compression spray.

Dip: Submerge the end(s) of the timber in the eradicator for the recommended period.

Injection: Fluid will not penetrate painted, stained or polished surfaces. For fine furniture or when stripping is not possible.

Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler

How to use

Wood repairs

Preparation for repairs: Identify the full extent of any decay by probing the wood with a sharp instrument. Cut out all badly decayed and very soft wood. Remove paint, varnish, dirt or loose material from the area for repair and immediately around it for about 25-50mm (1- 2 inches). If wood is wet, allow it to dry thoroughly before using Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener (see separate Cuprinol Technical Information sheet) and Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler. For best results, pre-treat the repair area with an appropriate Cuprinol Wood Preserver and allow it to dry. To obtain better anchorage of the Wood Filler in deep holes (greater than 25mm or 1 inch), fix screws into the bottom of the holes leaving the heads and stems exposed inside the holes.

Mixing filler and catalyst paste

Only mix an amount of Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler that can be used within 10 minutes. Using a hard surface such as the plastic lid of the container or a wooden board, mix the filler and catalyst paste with a spatula or putty knife in the proportions of a golf ball size of filler to 40mm (1.5 inch) thread of catalyst paste from the tube. Mix thoroughly until no streaks remain and the colour is uniform.

NB: Adding too much catalyst will cause the filler to become very hot, to dry very quickly, and affect its performance. Apply a thin coat of mixed filler to the repair, pressing well in to get good adhesion. Immediately fill in the remainder of the hole, leaving slightly proud for smoothing down. Allow to set hard, this takes about 30 minutes under normal conditions. Smooth to the required contours using sandpaper or file. The repair can then be finished with either a paint or woodstain.

(A slight tackiness may occur on the surface, but this will not affect smoothing down, painting or staining).

For deeper repairs, apply the filler in layers allowing each layer to dry. When the filler has hardened, rub down the area using an abrasive paper or file to remove surplus filler. Finally, remove sanding dust.

Additional information

Do not put mixed filler back into the tin with unused filler.

Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler is flexible enough to match small movements in wood, but excessive expansion and contraction that occurs when wood becomes excessively wet, could cause cracking at the wood to filler boundary. It is therefore important to protect the wood from becoming too wet by attention to good decoration and sealing of joints.

Do not use to fill gaps between floor boards.

Metals

Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler has no effect on metals.

Paints and woodstains

The filler will accept paints and woodstains such as Cuprinol and Dulux Trade Woodstains, although the degree to which it may show through will be influenced by the preparation, the nature and characteristics of the wood as well as the type and application of the woodstain. Try a test area to ensure satisfaction before proceeding.

Cuprinol All Purpose Wood Filler

How to use

Tub: Ensure surfaces are clean and dry. Stir well before use. Apply using a wet filling knife. For deep holes build up in layers, allowing each layer to dry. Leave proud and when completely dry (normally 2 hours) sand down and dust off. Finish with stain, varnish or paint. When over painted, stained or varnished the filled area may differ in colour to the surrounding area, therefore we recommend filling and finishing a small test area first to ensure that the appearance is acceptable. Do not use with wood dye.

Tube: Ensure surfaces are clean and dry. Knead tube to mix contents. Apply using a wet filling knife. For deep holes build up in layers, allowing each layer to dry. Leave proud and when completely dry (normally 2 hours) sand down and dust off.

Finish with stain, varnish or paint. When over painted, stained or varnished the filled area may differ in colour to the surrounding area, therefore we recommend filling and finishing a small test area first to ensure that the appearance is acceptable. Do not use with wood dye.

Cartridge: Ensure surfaces are clean and dry. Cut the nozzle to the required width and place into cartridge gun. Apply along or in the repair area, smoothing with a wet knife where necessary, leaving the filler slightly proud for sanding. For deep holes (greater than 5mm deep) build up in layers, allowing each layer to dry. Leave proud and when completely dry (normally 2 hours) sand down and dust off. Finish with stain, varnish or paint. When over-painted, stained or varnished the filled area may differ in colour to the surrounding area, therefore we recommend filling and finishing a small test area first to ensure that the appearance is acceptable. Do not use with wood dye. For breaks in between filling release trigger on cartridge gun to avoid overspill.

Decayed wood

If wood is severely damaged or decayed, or for deeper holes, use Cuprinol Ultra Tough Wood Filler. In the case of decayed wood, Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener may also be required.

Paints and woodstains

Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener

How to use

Preparation

Application

Apply Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener liberally by brush to the repair area and immediately around it. Apply 2-3 coats, allowing each to soak in before the next coat is applied. Do not allow previous coat to dry fully before the next is applied.

Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener does not change the colour of most woods, but it may modify the colour of some hardwoods. A slight film may be formed after treatment with Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener on the surface of timbers of low absorbency. The colour of Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Filler Natural is similar to that of common softwoods.

It is recommended that wood treated with Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener be lightly sanded before applying paint, varnish or woodstain to the filled repair.

Rubber, Bitumen and Plastics

Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener will soften rubber, bitumen and some plastics. Avoid runs onto such materials or onto sound existing finishes. Avoid splashing plants.

Metals

Cuprinol Ultimate Repair Wood Hardener has no effect on metals.

Cuprinol Ultra Tough Decking Stain

How to use

Timber specifically sold as decking is normally pretreated with wood preserver to prevent decay. Ensure timber used in ground contact has been pretreated or sold specifically for use as decking. Surfaces should be clean, dry and free from algae and mould. For best results brush to remove dirt and debris and then clean the surface thoroughly with *Cuprinol Decking Cleaner. Rinse well and allow to dry. Resinous or oily wood may affect performance.

New wood: Wipe with white spirit to remove any natural oils/resins.

Weathered wood: Completely remove all grey wood by sanding back to sound wood.

Painted or varnished wood: Sand off or chemically strip existing coatings then treat as bare wood.

Sound wood stained wood: Wash with *Cuprinol Decking Cleaner and water to remove dirt and grease and allow to dry.
